Your road to the truck licence

Theory training

If this is your first licence, basic theory and class-specific theory come together. Since you already hold class B for the truck classes, the basic theory is usually waived and only the class-specific theory remains.

  • Class C1: 6 double lessons (90 min) of basic theory and 6 double lessons of class-specific theory
  • Class C: 6 double lessons of basic theory and 10 double lessons of class-specific theory, class CE: 4 double lessons of class-specific theory

Practical training

The number of practice lessons depends on your ability – usually around 10 lessons. The special training drives are laid down by law for every class.

  • Class C1: 3 hours on rural roads, 1 hour on the motorway, 1 hour of night driving
  • Class C: 5 hours on rural roads, 2 hours on the motorway, 3 hours of night driving
  • Class CE: 5 hours on rural roads, 2 hours on the motorway, 3 hours of night driving

What you need for your application

  • Valid ID card or passport plus a copy of your class B driving licence
  • Biometric passport photo
  • Medical examination and eye specialist report
  • Proof of your first aid course

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car licence for the truck licence?

Yes. For all truck classes you must already hold class B. You can, however, start your training in parallel, as long as class B has been issued before the truck test.

What is the difference between C1 and C?

Class C1 covers vehicles from 3,500 to 7,500 kg and is available from the age of 18. Class C covers vehicles over 3,500 kg with no upper weight limit and usually requires you to be 21. For trailers over 750 kg you also need C1E or CE.

Can the training be funded?

Yes. Funding through an education voucher (Bildungsgutschein) from the employment agency or the job centre is possible if you want to launch a career as a professional driver. Talk to us – we know the process and will help you with the paperwork.
