1 The 12 double lessons of basic theory apply when you get your first licence. If you already hold a driving licence, you only need 6 double lessons. A double lesson lasts 90 minutes, a driving lesson 45 minutes.

When upgrading from A1 to A2 or from A2 to A, the training is dropped completely if you have held the lower class for at least 2 years – the practical test is then enough. Before those 2 years are up, 3 hours on rural roads, 2 on the motorway and 1 at night apply.

Details according to the German Driving Licence Regulation (FeV) and the German Driving Instruction Regulation (FahrschAusbO), as of July 2026. All figures are statutory minimum requirements – how many extra practice lessons you need depends on your personal ability.

Your road to the motorbike licence

Theory training

You learn the theory flexibly with our theory app and in class. If you already hold a driving licence, the basic theory is waived and only the class-specific theory remains. Just ask us for the current lesson times.

  • 12 double lessons of basic theory when you get your first licence, otherwise only 6
  • 2 double lessons of class-specific theory for AM, 4 double lessons for A1, A2 and A

Practical training

First you practise the basic riding manoeuvres on our training ground, then you head out into real traffic. For Mofa and class AM around 2 practice lessons are enough, with no special training drives – for A1, A2 and A the legally required special drives are added.

  • 5 driving lessons on rural roads (45 min. each)
  • 4 driving lessons on the motorway (45 min. each)
  • 3 driving lessons in the dark or at dusk (45 min. each)

What you need for your application

  • Valid ID card or passport
  • Biometric passport photo
  • Eyesight test (no more than 2 years old)
  • Proof of your first aid course

Frequently asked questions

Which motorbike class is right for me?

That depends on your age and the engine power you want. AM allows scooters up to 45 km/h from the age of 15, A1 covers light motorcycles up to 125 cc from 16, A2 mid-size motorbikes up to 35 kW from 18, and class A every motorbike with no power limit from 24. We are happy to advise you on the best way to start.

What does the staged licence A1, A2 and A mean?

If you already hold a lower class, moving up is much quicker. After holding class A1 for two years, a practical test is enough for A2 with no new theory, and after holding class A2 for two years you can move up to class A at just 20 years of age.

Can I ride a scooter with a car licence?

Yes. With code B196 you may also ride light motorcycles up to 125 cm³ in addition to class B – with no test at all. You need to be at least 25 years old and to have held class B for at least 5 years. Our course covers 9 teaching units: 4 hours of theory and 5 one-to-one driving lessons.
